RCH Brewery

Our Story

1983 – First brew

As part of the Royal Clarence Hotel, Burnham-on-Sea, 1983 saw the birth of our first brew, KC Bitter (ABV 3.6%)

1992 – New Head Brewer joins the team and demand for our beers explodes!

Graham Dunbavan joined the team as Head Brewer and new beers were developed, most notably Pitchfork and Old Slug.

Production quickly grew from 5bl (180 gallons) a fortnight to 15bl a week (540 gallons), maxxing out the capacity of the brewhouse in the hotel! Brewing became a problem because the brewery used all the cold water supply to the hotel in the afternoon and the guests couldn’t wash! It was decided that we had to look for other premises.

1993 – The move to West Hewish

A new site was discovered in a hamlet called West Hewish near Weston Super Mare. The building had been used for making cider and previously as a transport yard. A three month refit and we were ready to brew on our new 15bl plant.

1993 – A new logo and new look

A new logo and identity too and we were all good to go!

1999 – Brewhouse Extension and Upgrade

Further increased demand for our beers meant we had to extend the brewhouse and upgrade to a 30bl brew plant.

2000 – A Champion Beer at a prestige event!

Our first Tuckers Maltings Supreme Champion Beer was awarded to us for ‘Double Header’ – we were no stranger to awards by this time but this was extra special as the festival is organised by brewers from all over the South West and is therefore held in very high regard. This marked the start of our journey of winning every category at this esteemed event – the only brewer to have achieved this (as of 2016).

2016 – Brewhouse Fire and a rising from the Ashes

January 2016 saw us suffer a fire in the brewhouse. Overnight on the 23rd January the fuse box went up causing untold damage. The brewhouse underwent refurbishment and the main building got a lick of paint too.

2016 – A fresh new makeover for the logo and  NEW LOOK!

The fire gave us the opportunity to create a whole new image and a makeover was undertaken to set up the brewery for the next phase of it’s exciting journey!
